Mother of Buffalo is a documentary film following Jean Leung’s years-long and daily effort to protect an endangered herd of wild water buffalo on Hong Kong’s Lantau Island. It’s a story of perseverance, the connection and conflict between humans and nature, and a rarely-seen side of Hong Kong amidst transformative change.
Recipient of the North Texas Pioneer Award grant from the Austin Film Society and funding from The Swire Group Charitable Trust.
This project has been filming since August 2020 and concluded filming in February 2026. A work-in-progress film has been screened at private events in Hong Kong and Dallas.
