Mother of Buffalo is a documentary film following Jean Leung’s years-long and daily effort to protect an imperiled herd of free-roaming water buffalo on Hong Kong’s Lantau Island. It’s a story of perseverance, the connection and conflict between humans and nature, and a rarely-seen side of Hong Kong amidst transformative change.

Recipient of the North Texas Pioneer Award grant from the Austin Film Society and funding from The Swire Group Charitable Trust.

This project commenced filming in August 2020 and concluded filming in September 2026. A work-in-progress Part One of the film has screened at schools, museums, and community events in Hong Kong and the United States, and worldwide on Cathay Pacific flights.

A feature-length film covering the full 6 year story is currently in post-production and seeking finishing funds and distribution.
